Education:
- Publicize excellent "Smart Cycling" booklet issued by SMPD
- Request SMPD to create booklet for drivers "Smart Driving around Cyclists"
- Create ticket diversion program to educate cyclists which have been ticketed
- Connect with local media so that reporting about the next traffic collision or fatality can become a teachable moment for the community, prepare press release, connect with victims, give victims a face and improve local reporting
Changing the public discourse: "Accidents" seem guiltless and unpreventable
- Request meeting with SMPD to change remove "accident" from their vocabulary as a way to acknowledge that they are working to prevent collisions and crashes.
- Make sure that this change of terminology is accompanied by a public discussion
- Request that editors of local papers are engaged in this discussion and contribute to it
- Request meeting with KCRW / SCPR to conduct a public discussion about the usefulness of the term "accident" in their news and traffic announcements
Events:
- Open Street events (like Ciclavia) to create temporary safe environment for cyclists
- Other educational events
Data and Numbers:
- Work with local hospitals to improve statistics for ped and bike crashes with are not reported to the police. Establish hospital data for bike on ped crashes which are rarely reported to the police
- Work with insurance companies for additional statistical info for ped and bike crashes and for safe/unsafe streets
- Work with SMMUSD and PTA school district and their reporting of crashes and collisions
Infrastructure Improvements:
- Streetlights at intersections
- Bicycle Boulevards as a measure against cut-through traffic in residential districts
Reporting Improvements:
- Establish a online unsafe driving facility which will enable the police to use community input in order to educate unsafe drivers
- Publicize online "fix my street" application which will allow pedestrians and cyclists to requests repairs and improvements
City Council:
- Reconsider prohibition of sidewalk cycling for busy arterial without bike lane markings (eg Lincoln, Wilshire)
- Adopt Complete Streets Policy
Schools and Campus:
- Establish Safe Routes to School Liaison at each school and for district PTA
- Work with Crossroads School: The First Bicycle Friendly School in Santa Monica
- Establish Vulnerable Road User Liaison at Santa Monica College
- Establish data collection and reporting procedures from school nurses to school district in order to evaluate prevalence and seriousness of crashes involving students and staff around schools
- Educate the members of the School Board and of the Community Health & Safety District Advisory Committee
